Perspectives

Perspectives is an interactive installation prototype centered on color, light, and materials. Two users control the colors of the pulsing light pattern on the screens by sliding an RGB color scale on the connected computers. The light shining into the tube creates an illusion of volume. Visitors select the outer color, and the program automatically fills the center tube with the complementary color from across the color wheel. Each person controls the color combinations viewed by the person on the other side. In this way, participation in the installation becomes collaborative, and it’s necessary to stand up and move to view your own input. The idea is to invite participants to view the installation from multiple angles or perspectives.

The project has a materials and fabrication focus, experimenting with how different filaments refract color and light when printed on different machines. The 32x32 pixel LED matrices are joined by a 3D-printed cylinder that is interchangeable for different visual effects through the material. The installation is programmed in Processing. Since users choose the colors, the combinations are always unique. What is especially interesting is to observe the surprising blend of color that happens inside the tube. Although conceived as a prototype of a large-scale interactive artwork, Perspectives could also be used as an aesthetic home light.

This prototype came out of the one-week workshop Programming Interactive Objects in SUPSI’s MA Interaction Design, led by Andreas Gysin in 2025. My collaborator was Federico Emanuele Mameo.
